Hello! I’m Lola Kalman and I’m an artist during my spare time. I studied art at LaGuardia High School and the Cooper Union in NYC, but I now live a very different life, in a pastoral corner of Rishon Lezion, Israel, with my husband and growing family. For my own psychic health, I try to always be in some phase of artistic creation, whether it be writing, shooting, editing, or just musing while making pickles for my toddler. He really loves pickles. I decided a while back that even if I don’t pursue art as a career, like some of my peers, I had better keep making films just the same, even if my parents are the only ones watching. And who knows? Maybe they’ll even be more artistically pure if they’re not linked to my livelihood.

That said, I still harbour the new American dream of being discovered through the internet. Want to help make it happen?

Your parents are not the only ones who are watching your films. Via youtube I happened upon and watched your documentary on Staten Island. It was wonderful. I grew up on Staten Island, left it to go to high school in Manhattan and following high school graduation in 1987 never again lived on the Island. It is difficult for me to say this without sounding senseless but here it goes: in a short time from when I lived on the Island, the Island you have shown is so different, yet still the same. I always wanted to get off of the Island-for many reasons. My father always said someday you will proudly say you are from Staten Island. I do not know if that will ever be the case for my generation, but maybe for one in the future. Keep making art! You are a very fine artist.
Enjoy your family and Israel. It is a wonderful country. In fact my wife’s family played a role in the pre-1948 years in Rishon Lezion.
